Freya Tewelde is a London-based interdisciplinary artist working across painting, moving image, sound, and installation. Through abstraction, she explores perception, memory, ritual, and ways of knowing that extend beyond language. Rather than illustrating fixed narratives, her work creates spaces for contemplation, ambiguity, and reflection.

Born in Asmara, Eritrea, and raised in Saudi Arabia, Tewelde’s practice has been shaped by movement across cultures, landscapes, and systems of belief. These experiences inform an enduring interest in belonging, cosmology, and the ways personal and collective histories are carried through the body.

Her paintings develop intuitively through processes of layering, erasure, and accumulation, evolving over time rather than towards a predetermined image. Gesture, material, colour, and atmosphere remain in continual negotiation, with forms shifting between emergence and dissolution. The work draws on ecology, cosmology, and psychospiritual inquiry, approaching abstraction as both a visual language and a way of knowing.

Tewelde holds an MA in Fine Art and a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. Recent exhibitions include Geometry of Elsewhere at Gallery 1957, London (2026); 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, Marrakech (2026); What the Mountain Has Seen at the Exhibition Research Lab, Liverpool John Moores University (2025); and Supernova and Artist of the Day at Flowers Gallery, London (2024). She will present work with Gallery 1957 at Frieze Seoul in September 2026. Her work has been featured in Whitehot Magazine, Glass Magazine, Art Plugged, and Le Quotidien de l’Art, and is held in private collections internationally.
